Judging The Working Condition Of The Generator Set By Observing The Accumulation Of Carbon At The Exhaust Port

Due to wear and tear, the power of the generator set will decrease after a period of use, which is a normal phenomenon. Engine wear refers to the friction between the friction surfaces generated by the contact between the running components of the engine. With frictional resistance, there is loss, which causes the consumption of mechanical energy and the conversion of heat, resulting in wear.

 

Because the power part of the generator set slides or rotates at a high speed, although there is varying degrees of lubrication, as the working time increases, the surfaces in contact with each other will inevitably experience friction, component wear, and power reduction. One of the methods to determine the working condition of a mobile generator set is to observe the accumulation of carbon at the exhaust port.

 

The carbon buildup at the exhaust port of the generator set is black gray in color, with a surface that appears to be covered in a layer of white frost. The carbon buildup layer is not thick or extremely thin, indicating that the diesel engine of the unit is in good working condition. The color of the accumulated charcoal is black and shiny, but not wet, indicating that the generator set is slightly burning oil. The thick carbon buildup at the exhaust port of a certain cylinder indicates that the fuel injector of the cylinder is not working properly or the cylinder sealing has deteriorated, and should be repaired or replaced.

 

Individual exhaust ports that are wet or have oil flow marks indicate that the cylinder is burning oil and should be inspected and repaired. There are many reasons for engine oil burning, such as severe wear of piston rings, severe wear of cylinders, severe wear of valve guides or failure of guide oil seals, failure of oil seal devices in turbochargers, and failure of one-way valves in the crankcase ventilation ducts, all of which may cause oil to enter the combustion chamber. The carbon deposits at the exhaust ports of each cylinder are thick and have a darker color, which is often caused by low operating temperatures or late fuel injection, resulting in severe afterburning.

 

During the process of our mobile generator set, combustion occurs, and substances such as oil sludge and carbon deposits generated by insufficient combustion will adsorb onto the wall of the exhaust pipe. Therefore, after using it for a period of time, it is inevitable that the exhaust pipe will turn black. Severe carbon deposition is highly likely to cause unstable idle, decreased power, and weak acceleration, affecting the normal operation of the mobile generator set.
